COP part two: initial sketchbook work

As with the essay, I was very lost about where to continue this project. My essay was so very broad there wasn't a particular point to it.

Although it was suggested I take a broad approach, I was too confused as to where to start so I went back to the study of protesting and riots. I felt that the one subject I could work most from was Zygmunt Bauman's idea about the relationship between consumerism, wealth and class divide and how people react at protests, i.e. rioting and looting.

He thought that violence and looting was not so much a desperate and defiant mark of protest and the need for change, but rather the stealing involved was a way for people to attain material goods, though these desires may be unconscious. To quote: "they did not rebel against consumerism, but made a misguided attempt to join the ranks"

And so I began my project, not only looking into riots and looting and Bauman's connection, but protesting in general. I will probably specify my ideas down even more at a later date.

And although there's been a lot of to-ing and fro-ing between ideas, now is the time to stick to one and make it work! I think making physical work in reaction to an idea as opposed to just thinking about it with words will get the ball rolling more.
