Why am I interested in Outsider Art / the MoBA?
  • sincerity and enthusiasm in image making
    • this is all I want, though why should I assume trendy/ kitschy images are not part of this narrative? I will always doubt it though!
  • intuition and innateness of image making
  • what drives people to record their world through art
  • rebellion / parody of arts institutions
  • discussion of commodification vs encouraging artists

Thoughts on the Museum of Bad Art:
  • would the painters I love like Miroco Machiko and Mogu Takahashi be displayed here? I feel that there is a certain deliberance and confidence that distinguishes artists like them than what is being displayed in that gallery.
  • similar thoughts with artists like David Shrigley, Paul Davis (and more that I cannot remember at this moment). As well as being so honed and deliberate and confident do they use the style as an addition to their humour- would their concepts not be as funny if it wasn't for the *ugliness*? Does something need to be pretty if it's got a concept?
  • does the gallery make fun of artists or encourage them?
  • the exclusiveness of bad art
  • is the work in MoBa kitsch or outsider art?
------------------------------------------------------

steps from here?
  • more research on the Museum of Bad Art
  • research the definitions of Outsider Art and Bad Art and the Ugly
  • more in depth case studies of specific artists?
  • think about connection of illustration / 'professional' art and outsider -> can they be distinguished visually/ content wise?
